Finance teams already work with structured data and repeatable cycles, which makes them well suited to Microsoft Copilot, as long as review controls stay in place.
1. Variance analysis
Where: Copilot in Excel, with tidy data in a table.
Compare actuals with budget by cost centre for September. List the ten largest variances in pounds, show the percentage, and flag any variance over 10% of budget. For the three largest adverse variances, check the transaction detail on the Detail sheet and suggest possible drivers. Say which rows you used.Check: reconcile totals to the ledger and confirm drivers with budget holders.
2. Management commentary
Where: Copilot in Word, referencing the workbook.
Draft the commentary section of the September management accounts using Variances Sep.xlsx. One paragraph each on revenue, staff costs and overheads. Factual, no speculation, figures in £k to one decimal place.3. Audit and information requests
From my emails with [audit firm] since 1 September, list every information request, the date requested, who is responsible and whether a reply has been sent. Present it as a table.4. Finance policy agent
Where: Agent Builder, grounded in your finance policies on SharePoint.
Use it for expenses, purchasing thresholds and approval limits, so the team stops answering the same questions. See Writing agent instructions for a worked example.
5. Month-end automation
Where: Power Automate with Microsoft Copilot.
On the third working day of each month at 9am, post a message in the Finance Close Teams channel listing the open tasks from the Month End Checklist SharePoint list, grouped by owner.6. Supplier query triage
Summarise the supplier payment queries in the Accounts Payable shared mailbox this week. Group by supplier, identify any that mention late payment or legal action, and draft holding replies for my review.Check: confirm payment status in the finance system before any reply.
