Prompts for real work

Six prompt patterns that hold up on messy, real tasks.

IGOE AI learning resource · Our guides are independent educational content, not a promise of course inclusions. See the current five-course training offer.

The four-part prompt gets you started. Real work is messier: long documents, unclear briefs, several stakeholders. These six patterns are the ones I find myself teaching most often.

1. Interview me first

When the task is unclear, let Microsoft Copilot ask the questions.

Prompt
I need to write a proposal for [client] on [topic]. Before drafting anything, ask me the questions you need answered to write a strong first draft. Ask them one at a time.

2. Show the shape

If you have a good example, use it for format, not content.

Prompt
Here is a status update I liked: [paste]. Write this week's update for Project Atlas in the same structure and length, using the notes below. Do not copy any content from the example.

3. Constrain the output

Constraints make answers usable.

Prompt
Summarise the attached report in exactly five bullets, each under 20 words, then one sentence on the single biggest risk.

4. Separate thinking from writing

Ask for the plan, agree it, then ask for the draft.

Prompt
Propose an outline for a client note explaining the change in reporting deadlines. Do not write the note yet.

Then: "Good. Write sections 1 and 2 using that outline."

5. Argue the other side

Prompt
Here is my recommendation: [paste]. Make the strongest case against it, then tell me what evidence would change your view.

6. Ground and cite

Prompt
Answer using only the attached policy. Quote the section number for every point. If the policy does not cover something, say "not covered".

Make it stick

  • Custom instructions: tell Microsoft Copilot your preferences once (for example "British English, concise, I work in a UK accountancy practice") so you do not repeat them in every prompt.
  • Copilot Memory: Microsoft Copilot can remember useful facts about how you work. You can review and manage what it remembers.
  • Prompt Gallery: save prompts that work and share them with your team.
